The Majlis today approved the Vice President, Mr Waheed Deen, and Cabinet Ministers proposed by President Dr Mohamed Waheed. The vote was unanimous of those present and voting, which included 46 members representing all the political parties that have seats in the Majlis. Though most of former President Nasheed's MDP members walked out of the chamber, 1 MDP MP remained to vote for the new Vice President and Cabinet Ministers.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, has said that the approval given to the Vice President and the Cabinet Ministers shows the wide-ranging support President Waheed’s Government enjoys in the country. Making a remark on DhiTV's Fourth Estate program last night, she noted that “the Majlis which is constituted by representatives of the people has shown overwhelming support for the Vice President and members of the cabinet. This is a major victory for the National Unity Government.”
At a special press conference, President Waheed also thanked the Members of the People’s Majlis for the strong support and endorsement of the Administration given through the vote. He then noted the many distinguished services by Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen and expressed pleasure that he was approved by the Parliament as the Vice President. He added he was confident the Vice President Deen would play a vital role towards national reconciliation.
Cabinet Ministers were approved in today’s sitting, which included Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Dr Abdul Samad Abdullah. H.E. Dr Abdul Samad Abdullah has vast experience and knowledge in national and international affairs having served the Government of Maldives as well as in the United Nations.
Today’s sitting of the People’s Majlis was attended by 47 members.
