Maldives reiterated its support for the two-state solution and called for the full realisation of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on the Situation of the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations stressed that it is critical for the Security Council to strengthen efforts to formulate new ways of moving forward to ensure lasting solutions in the Middle East. While noting how distant the idea of peace seems in the face of escalated conflict, he stressed that the two-state solution remains the only viable option for peace. Ambassador Sareer also noted the tragic humanitarian crisis in Syria, underscoring the importance of achieving an inclusive political solution based on the Geneva talks. He also expressed Maldives’ deep concern over the situation in Yemen and urged the international community to mobilize humanitarian assistance in order to reach the increasingly vast population of Yemen in dire need of aid. Maldives reiterated its support for the historic framework agreement reached between Iran and the P5+1, and said that it “represents an opportunity to resolve more than the nuclear issue alone” citing it as a “clear example of how political will, and continuous effort can help reach solutions”.
