19 November 2017, New York, Minister of Gender and Family, Ms. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki participated in the UN Secretary General's High Level roundtable on Women's Economic Empowerment which was held on the side-lines of the Seventy Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly this afternoon. During Minister Zenysha's intervention at the event, she stated that economic empowerment of women is an area given high priority by the Government of Maldives and added that in an effort to promote women's participation in leadership positions, in 2014, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, made it a mandatory requirement that at least 30% of seats on the managing boards of all government agencies, commissions, and state-owned enterprises be filled by women. She announced that the government has met 80% of this target to date. Minister further added that the Government has introduced special loan schemes for women to get easier access to build small and medium enterprises, and are also providing capacity building trainings and workshops for women's development committees established at island level. Minister Zenysha also informed that there is a Council for Economic Empowerment of Women, to advise and assist the efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Gender & Family. The Side-Event was chaired by the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres and key-note speakers included President of Costa Rica Mr. Luis Guillermo Solís and Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Haseena.
