Speaking at the open debate on the Council’s Working Methods, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, said that in keeping with the mandate of the Council derived from article 24 of the UN Charter; “there is an obligation among every member of the Council to ensure that every decision is transparent and in the best interests of the global community.”

In its statement, the Maldives welcomed annual debates on the working methods of the Council and the recent procedure issued for Council members to exchange information with the Council’s entire membership, as well as with relevant stakeholder Member States from the General Membership of the United Nations with regards to drafting resolutions, presidential statements and press statements.

Ambassador Sareer urged the need for greater transparency with regard to the appointment of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Since the role of the Secretary-General has evolved over the decades, it is essential that the global community have a say in choosing the Secretary-General. “The selection process should reflect the concerns of the wider membership in order to enhance the legitimacy of the Secretary-General as truly representing the global community,” he said.

The Maldives is a founding member of ACT (Accountability, Transparency and Coherence), a cross-regional group of 23 countries dedicated to improving the working methods of the Council to be coherent with the Security Council’s mandate in the 21st Century.
