The Maldives today, reiterated its strong support for a post-2015 Development Agenda, including a stand-alone goal on gender equality and empowerment. Speaking at the High Level General Assembly Thematic Debate on “Advancing Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls for a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda”, His Excellency Mr Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations reiterated the importance placed by the Government of Maldives to promote gender equality, and prohibit gender-based violence. He also highlighted the importance of focusing on altering discriminatory social attitudes and cultural norms, to bring meaningful change.

Ambassador Sareer also briefed the General Assembly on the advancements that Maldives has made in terms of access to education and decent work.  He further outlined challenges faced by the Maldives faces in ensuring that gains made in access to education for girls, are translated to gender equality in the workforce.

The Maldives is participating in a one-day Thematic Debate on “Advancing Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls for a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda”, convened by the President of the General Assembly.
