The Maldives has highlighted the priorities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to newly appointed Secretary General-designate, Mr. Antonio Guterres.
The Maldives Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mr. Ahmed Sareer, speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), emphasized the need for the effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda, SAMOA Pathway and the Paris Agreement, and highlighted the important upcoming negotiations taking place regarding Oceans and Seas. The Maldives statement also stressed the need for greater representation of SIDS in the executive offices of the United Nations.
Ambassador Sareer posed specific questions to the Secretary General-designate on behalf of the Group, which were acknowledged and addressed by Mr. Guterres.
Over 16 country groupings, and 50 member states addressed the Secretary General-designate at the informal meeting convened by the President of the General Assembly at the United Nations today.
