At the General Assembly debate on the situation in Afghanistan today, the Maldives expressed its encouragement for Afghanistan, in their quest towards peace and harmony in the country.

The statement, delivered by His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives, noted that the Maldives is encouraged by the continuous efforts by the Government of Afghanistan in maintaining peace and security, namely the inclusive development and recognition of the important role of women in society, promotion of the rule of law, accountability, addressing corruption in the country and governmental reforms.

Further, he expressed hope for the continuation of the official talks and dialogue between the representatives of Afghanistan Government and Taliban that were aimed at ceasing all hostilities and focused on a people-centered approach in developing the country.

Maldives also welcomed efforts by Afghanistan for regional collaboration and remains in solidarity with the people and the Government of Afghanistan in their efforts towards maintaining peace and harmony in the country.

Maldives expressed concern regarding the ongoing security-related incidents within the country. These armed clashes continue to result in significant civilian casualties and displacement among Afghan civilians. The also called the international community for their support and commitment for Afghanistan it in its quest for peace and security.
