While speaking at the quarterly debate of the UN Security Council on the situation on the Middle East, the Maldives joined other states in expressing concerns regarding the inability of the Security Council to address the humanitarian situation in Syria, as well as the perpetuating conflict in Palestine.

Addressing the Security Council, the Maldives Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mr. Ahmed Sareer noted "the inability of the Security Council in exercising the duties that it has been entrusted with by the international community, through the UN Charter, in the maintenance of international peace and security".

In its statement, the Maldives urged the Council to use all appropriate means to protect civilians, end violence, and ensure accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity as it would otherwise set a dangerous precedent regarding the role of the Security Council in addressing conflicts in the future.
