13 October 2011, New York: The Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Honduras established diplomatic relations, today. The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by H.E. Mr Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations and by H.E. Ms. Mary Elizabeth Flores, Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of Honduras. The ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Honduras.
Honduras is located in Central America with costal shores bordering the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. The nation’s political system is classified as a constitutional republic, with President Porfirio Lobo Sosa having come to power in January of 2010.
During the ceremony, Permanent Representative Flores spoke of the desire to further coordinate expanding the ban on commercial shark fishing beyond the borders of these two countries. Permanent Representative Ghafoor concurred and noted with appreciation the close collaboration between the two countries on many issues of mutual interest in the international arena. He also expressed the hope that the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries would help usher in a new era of closer bilateral relations between the Maldives and Honduras.
Honduras is the 160th country to establish diplomatic relations with the Maldives.
