21 September 2016, New York – The Republic of Maldives and Saint Kitts and Nevis has established diplomatic relations today. The joint communiqué establishing relations between the two countries were signed by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and Honourable Mark Brantley, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The joint communiqué was signed at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations in New York.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Minister Asim highlighted that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries marks a historic opening for cooperation connecting the peoples of the two countries in all areas of mutual interest.
Minister from Saint Kitts and Nevis spoke of the importance of coordinating their issues of mutual concern as relates to the agenda of the United Nations.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a small island state located in the Caribbean, with the land mass constituting of two mountainous islands. The population is approximately 55,712 and has a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy.
