The Maldives delivered a statement today at the Second Committee on Agenda Item 24 concerning eradication of poverty and other development challenges.
The Maldives highlighted its commitment to eliminate poverty by concerted national policies and programs aimed at alleviation through measures undertaken in health, education and social sectors, by adopting a people-centered approach to development. Stressing the multi faceted nature of poverty and urging for more holistic approaches to fight it, Maldives said that, “poverty eradication cannot be seen in a vacuum, but has to be understood in its entirety; not just as a separate agenda item but viewed according to the effects it has on all other elements of the Agenda”. The Maldives also highlighted the importance the Government places on the empowerment of youth, given the large youth population. It also focused on the challenges posed by rising inequality between and within societies, as a significant concern.
The statement at the Third Committee was delivered by Ms. Farzana Zahir, Representative of the Maldives Delegation.
