The General Assembly has held its 1st plenary meeting on 13 September 2011 where it set in place a Credentials Committee for its sixty-sixth session. The Maldives were prominently appointed by the General Assembly as one of the Committee’s nine members, amongst them also China, the Russian Federation and the United States of America.

The Credentials Committee is responsible for verifying the credentials of representatives of Member States to the General Assembly. By being part of this committee, the Maldives show their continuous engagement with the United Nations and their willingness to take an active role within the realms of the international community.
During the opening speech, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gave special tribute to the memory of late Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld on the fiftieth anniversary of his death. He pointed out the inspiration drawn from Hammarskjöld’s “power of conviction”.
