The new Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States, H. E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the United States of America, H. E. Mr. Barack Obama. The ceremony was held today at the White House.
After receiving the Credentials, President Obama congratulated Ambassador Sareer and stated that he looked forward to working closely with the Maldives to deepen the already close relations between the two countries. President Obama applauded the Maldives’ first democratic elections in 2008, and said that he looked to the Government of Maldives to continue strengthening democratic institutions, protecting freedom of expression, and ensuring rule of law.
President Obama further stated that the United States recognizes the crucial role Maldives plays in promoting and enhancing maritime security in the Indian Ocean and in reminding the international community of the impact climate change will have if left unaddressed. He stated that the United States will continue cooperation with the Maldives in dealing with these issues as well as other issues of common interest.
Ambassador Sareer congratulated President Obama on his re-election to a second term in office and assured that the Maldives will continue to work closely with the United States, in further strengthening the existing ties between the two countries. Ambassador Sareer also conveyed the appreciation of the Government for the continued support extended to the Maldives. He also expressed his commitment to expanding cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of education and cultural exchanges, trade initiatives as well as defence cooperation. Ambassador Sareer further noted that the Maldives will continue working with the United States on important global issues of mutual concern, including promoting democracy, respect for fundamental human rights, as well as adaptation to climate change.
