Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms Dunya Maumoon met with the Secretary General of the United Nations Mr Ban Ki-moon, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Debate.
Minister Dunya expressed the Government of Maldives’ appreciation for the support of the United Nations throughout the development journey, especially as the country celebrates its fiftieth year of independence, and fiftieth anniversary of membership at the United Nations. Minister Dunya noted with appreciation the close relationship that exists between the UN Country Team in the Maldives and the Government, and noted that a new Development Assistance Framework has just been agreed and signed. Minister Dunya also urged the Secretary General to continue his advocacy efforts to realise a strong agreement on climate change later this year, in Paris.
The Secretary General congratulated the Maldives for its leadership efforts as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, in the lead up to the Post 2015 Development Agenda as well as in the climate change negotiations.
Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN Mr Ahmed Sareer participated in the meeting.
