Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Ms. Dunya Maumoon has welcomed the deal reached between The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, United Kingdom, China, France, Germany and Russia with regard to Iran’s nuclear programme.

The pact is the culmination of many years of negotiations and marks an important step towards achieving nuclear disarmament and global peace. This historic accord redesigns Iran’s nuclear programme to only enrich small amounts of uranium for civilian use and creates an inspection regime to ensure Iran’s compliance. The negotiations resulted in agreement from the United States and European allies to drop their economic sanctions against Iran, opening up Iran’s access to global markets for oil sales and other areas of economic exchange.

Hailing the peace accord, Foreign Minister Dunya stated: “Today’s agreement is a major contribution towards better diplomatic relations and peace in the region. The Maldives has always advocated for countries to stand together, side by side and choose to close this dark chapter of human history through the eventual prohibition and comprehensive destruction of all nuclear weapons.  The Maldives continues to call for nuclear disarmament and looks forward to all countries involved approving this agreement”.
