At the Second Committee Debate on Permanent Sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan, over their natural resources, Maldives reiterated its strong and steadfast support for the rights of Palestine, including the need for a two-state solution as a fundamental step towards safeguarding the human rights of the Palestinian people, and finally providing them with the right to self-determination.

Highlighting the linkages between peace and sustainable development, the Maldives condemned the policies including illegal settlement enterprises, collective punishment and disregard for human life and dignity, which affects all aspects of Palestinian society and economy. As an example, Ambassador Sareer, speaking on behalf of the Maldives, highlighted the particular situation of water in the occupied territories.

The Maldives further called on Israel to end all actions harming the environment, as well as its destruction of infrastructure, including water pipelines, sewage and electricity networks. Without peace there would be no development, and without development there can be no peace, Maldives iterated, while urging an end to the shameful occupation of Palestine and the Syrian Golan.
