The Maldives commended the important work of United Nations Special Political Missions on addressing root causes of conflict to sustain international peace and order, and the promotion of democracy and rule of law.

However, the Maldives urged the necessity of having defined, transparent and objective methodologies in the use of Special Political Missions. In its statement, the Maldives noted that inclusive and transparent consultations with the receiving State and all concerned stakeholders should be conducted, as well as the Special Political Missions must work from, and within, a prior approved and clear mandate. The Maldives also voiced the need for absolute impartiality and objectivity, and the importance of the Missions upholding the integrity of the United Nations during their service. The Maldives emphasized that the ultimate objective of the Special Political Missions should be the promotion of peace and harmony within the divergent factions, rather than contribute to further divisiveness within the society.

The Maldives viewed that conflict prevention and maintenance of peace and security and sustainable development are intrinsically linked, as enshrined in Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Maldives expressed that they are ready to work with the United Nations to prevent conflict and sustain peace and security.

The Statement was delivered by Mr. Ismail Raushan Zahir, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Maldives to the UN.
