The Maldives today delivered a statement to the Third Committee of the General Assembly, highlighting its efforts to counter the illicit trafficking of drugs in the country, and to combat crime by strengthening the criminal justice system and crime prevention mechanisms.

The Maldives stated that it welcomes the recommendations of the United Nations, in treating drug dependence as a health disorder, rather than a crime. Therefore, the Government has been increasingly using empirical and analytical data to address the human development vulnerabilities and the social consequences of drug abuse.

While condemning those participating in the deplorable acts of trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, the Maldives reiterated the commitment of its Government in tackling these problems with the support of the international community.

The Maldives further stated that the Government is working towards acceding to the relevant international legal instruments on the subject, including the Convention on Transnational Organized Crime and the Migrant Workers Convention in order to effectively combat these social ills.

The statement was delivered by Ms. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki from the Maldives delegation to the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
