30 November 2016, New York; Today, at the United Nations General Assembly during its debate on 'The situation of Middle East the Maldives stressed on the importance of compromise and the productive engagement of the international community to resolve the conflicts in the Middle East.

Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, Ms. Moomina Ibrahim, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the crucial importance of peace in the Middle East to the region and for the world as a whole. Noting that the perpetuating hostility and conflict in the occupied Palestine have compromised peace and security in the region for decades, the Maldives reiterated its call for the full realization of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people.

In its statement, the Maldives expressed grave concern over the escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria. It also reaffirmed its determination to support the cause of the Syrian people.

The Maldives statement further renewed its firm commitment to fight against terrorism and terrorist acts in all its forms and dimensions. The Maldives condemned 'attempts at attributing any terrorism to any religion, culture or tradition'.
