21st September 2011, New York City; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Naseem has signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court on behalf of the Republic of Maldives during a Treaty Event this afternoon.  The Treaty was deposited with Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel, Ms Patricia O’ Brien of the UN Office of Legal Affairs. The Rome Statute is an international treaty establishing the ICC, a permanent autonomous international court seated in The Hague, Netherlands. 

There are 116 High Contracting Parties to the court, 34 states, including the Maldives have so far signed and are still to ratify its statute. The Court has jurisdiction over the crimes of Genocide, Crimes against Humanity, War Crimes and the Crime of Aggression and represents a landmark for personal accountability of those committing atrocities worldwide.

The Treaty Event was also attended by H.E. Mr. Aslam Shakir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; H.E. Mr. Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Permanent Representative of Republic of Maldives to United Nations; H.E. Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; H.E. Mr Ahmed Sareer, High Commissioner for Bangladesh; H.E. Ms Thilmeeza Hussain, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Maldives Mission to the UN; H.E. Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Deputy Minister; and Mr. Amin Javed Faizal; Second Secretary of the Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.
