Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment "towards achieving social justice, equity and dignity for all, leading to a compassionate society” through closer partnerships with the global community. This was emphasized by Her Excellency Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister for Education of the Republic of Maldives, at the 47th Session of the Commission on Social Development.

Highlighting the country’s achievements and the significant gains made on MDGs over the past 20 years, Minister Shiham noted that the new Administration in Maldives has placed women’s empowerment, youth engagement, and enhancing the quality of life for the elderly at the center of its development agenda. In particular, the Minister emphasized the Government’s policy under an umbrella program of ‘no child is left behind,’ ensuring all children reach their full potential.

While the Maldives has made great strides in its sustainable development, climate change continues to produce significant setbacks. The future development path of the Maldives directly interlinks with the effects of climate change, and therefore, ensuring resilience and sustainability remains high priorities for the Maldives.

In addition to Minister Shiham, the Maldives delegation to the CPD also comprises of Dr Aishath Rameela, Minister of State for Gender and Family.
