At the United Nations General Assembly debate on peacekeeping operations, the Maldives announced its ongoing preparations for its very first contingent for deployment under the UN flag. Although, it noted due to technical difficulties and capacity issues, the target deadline for deployment this year could not be met. It however, voiced out hope of its intention to join the noble cause in the near future.

 

While emphasizing on centrality of Peacekeeping operation to the mandate of the United Nations, the Maldives recalled on the obligation of every member state to ensure the fulfillment of this mandate. The Maldives also called on member states to carry forward in a manner that honors the full aspiration of the UN Charter, aspiring to the highest standards and practices.

 

The Maldives further observed that Small Island Developing States are among the largest Troop Contributing Countries relative to their population size.  However, enabling capabilities, institutional and physical hurdles remain a challenge for many developing nations in preparing and sending contingents.

 

Maldives also expressed support to the comprehensive and expanding mandate of peacekeeping missions to meet the changing dynamics and dimensions of the world. In a similar line, Maldives offered its sincere appreciation to the nations and peoples who have volunteered themselves to bring meaningful change to the lives of those affected by conflict and strife.
