Maldives has reiterated its call for an independent Palestinian State and the cessation of the ongoing violence in Syria. H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Maldives made this call while speaking at the United Nations Security Council today.
Speaking for the second time in three months before the Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East, Ambassador Sareer said Maldives remained stout that Palestine must be recognized as a legitimate State. He viewed that the only way to bring about peace in the Middle East is on a two-State solution, with Israel and Palestine coexisting, living side-by-side in peace.
In his statement, Ambassador Sareer expressed his concern that recent events in Syria, including cross-border skirmishes with Turkey, threaten to engulf the entire Middle East region. While noting that “the violence, and unmitigated human rights abuses prevailing in Syria today are a disgrace to the community of nations”, he further called on renewed commitment from all stakeholders to the development of peace and stability in the region.
During the debate, Ambassador also welcomed the ongoing democratic developments in the region including the recent Presidential elections held in Egypt.
