23 September 2016, New York; Maldives highlights means of implementation of the means of  The Group of 77 held its fortieth annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the General Debate of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly today.

Speaking at its interactive debate on issues of importance to the Group of 77, Minister Asim, reiterated the importance of the Group, especially for small states like the Maldives. In particular, he noted the unity and solidarity of the Group as evidenced during the negotiations on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC.  He urged the Group to continue in this vein, as we move into the next phase: implementation.

Highlighting the importance of focusing on implementing the ambitious frameworks of 2015, Minister Asim spoke of the importance of realising the necessary means of implementation, speaking particularly to the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. While noting the importance of realizing these Agendas in their own merit, Minister Asim also noted the importance of maintaining coherence across all processes, so that all efforts are directed towards one goal, and efforts are not duplicated.

Minister Asim also congratulated the outgoing Chair, the Kingdom of Thailand for their efforts, and welcomed the incoming Chair, Ecuador, while committing the support of the Maldives to their work.
