The United Nations Economic and Social Council, convened a meeting of the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development from 26 June to 8 July 2015. Throughout the session, Maldives, voiced the priorities and vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing Islands (SIDS) as related to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Post-2015 Development Agenda. A SIDS focused session was arranged on the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway, adopted at the Third International Conference on SIDS held in Apia, Samoa on 4 September 2014.

In their interventions, the Maldives emphasized the importance of supporting SIDS to strengthen their capacity for data collection and analysis in order to better implement and conduct follow up and review mechanisms for the Sustainable Development Goals. The need for enhanced means of implementation was also highlighted as necessary for accelerating the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The Maldives also highlighted the importance of sustainable consumption and production patterns for SIDS and in this context, highlighted SIDS Dock energy program as examples of how Maldives and other island states are actively working to find financial and capacity support to make the transition to sustainable consumption and production.

The High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development, and provides leadership, guidance and recommendations on sustainable development commitments.
