New York – 7 May 2015 – Mr. Jeffrey Salim Waheed, Deputy Permanent Representative, intervened during the High-level Thematic Debate of the General Assembly on the World Drug Problem in support of the process towards the special session.

The Maldives underscored that despite the valiant efforts of all countries to counteract the World Drug Problem, it still continues to pose a serious threat, directly and indirectly to the health, safety and well-being of all human beings. The country recognised the unique challenges that the effort against drugs pose and has therefore closely cooperated with international stakeholders to introduce and enforce specialised legislation on drugs.

Mr. Waheed outlined that Member States should utilise the information in dialogues such as this High-level Thematic Debate, “to build further ammunition in our battle against drugs and eradicate this menace and protect our future generations”.
