Speaking about the outcomes of the various processes this year, including the AddisAbaba Action Agenda, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, H.E. Mr Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives noted, “our work has not completed with the adoption of these outcomes. It has just begun”.The thirty-ninth Annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China held today, focused on the priorities for the Group during the seventieth session of the United Nations. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, opened the session, both reaffirming their commitment to support the priorities of developing countries, particularly of the implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals.

 

 

In this remarks, Minister Ibrahim highlighted the crucial support of the developing countries, in the realisation of the development success Maldives has enjoyed over the fifty years since its independence. 2015 holds special meaning for the Maldives as it celebrates 50 years of independence, and 50 years of membership with the United Nations. Minister Ibrahim also iterated the need to see urgent action on climate change is it remains a clear threat to our human rights and our security. Highlighting the various processes ongoing in the multilateral arena, Minister Ibrahim emphasized the importance of maintaining coherence between all processes, particularly working collectively to ensure the success of the SAMOA Pathway, the sustainable development blueprint for Small Island Developing States.

The Group of 77 and China is currently chaired by the Republic of South Africa. The

Kingdom of Thailand will chair the group starting in January 2016.
