The Maldives, speaking at the General Debate of the Economic and Financial Committee of the United Nations General Assembly highlighted the unique vulnerabilities faced by SIDS, and the challenges they pose to the financing for infrastructure and human development. This is why the Maldives continues to push special consideration of financing needs for SIDS, as well as reconsideration of the criteria for graduation from LDC status.
In its statement, the Maldives underscored the importance of realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and its linkages with the various Programmes of action for countries in special situation, including the SAMOA Pathway. The importance of addressing the sustainable use and management of oceans and marine resources, as well as tackling climate change impacts, were highlighted as crucial contributors to sustaining the development gains made by the Maldives.
