Heads of States and Government of the 193 Member States of the United Nations gathered in New York City to formally adopt the new framework, “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” today. The 2030 Agenda contains the 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets designed to eradicate poverty, tackle inequality and address environmental sustainability. Speaking on the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, Minister Dunya noted that this marks a historic opportunity for the world to change the way it approaches the eradication of poverty, tackling inequality, and protecting our environment.

The Maldives was represented at the adoption of the new sustainable development framework by H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Energy, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, and the staff of the

Permanent Mission of Maldives. Minister Maumoon will address the Sustainable Development Summit later in the week.

The Sustainable Development Goals have emerged after three years of ongoing intergovernmental negotiations, aiming to effectively address environmental sustainability, economic growth and social inclusion. The Maldives as chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) played a substantial role in the negotiations, successfully advocating for goals addressing the conservation and sustainable use of

oceans, climate change, sustainable consumption and production, among many other critical issues.
