Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Maldives to the United Nations, Mr. Ahmed Sareer, pledged the Maldives’ continuing support for the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. Speaking at the third review of the document that was passed in 2006, he went on to outline the Maldives’ dedication to combatting terrorism having acceded to 12 international counter terrorism treaties.
In emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of terrorism, Ambassador Sareer underscored that the Maldivian “Government placed the prevention of violence at the forefront of its agenda. Yet, to succeed in this effort, the Government seeks to establish partnerships for sharing intelligence…and coordinate efforts to eradicate terrorism.”
The Ambassador then elaborated on the Maldivian Government’s efforts at strengthening democratic institutions, raising awareness on democratic rights and responsibilities, and promoting development in the country.
The Maldives also supported the Secretary General of the United Nations’ recommendation to appoint a Counter Terrorism Coordinator and Ambassador Sareer reiterated the nation’s support for the four pillars of the United Nations Global Counter Terrorism Strategy.
