19 September 2017, New York – The Republic of Maldives and The Republic of El Salvador has established diplomatic relations today. The joint communiqué establishing relations between the two countries were signed by Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and Ing. Hugo Roger Martínez Bonilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador. The joint communiqué was signed at a ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. In their remarks at the ceremony, Minister Asim and Minister Bonilla highlighted that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries marks a historic opening for cooperation connecting the peoples of the two countries in all areas of mutual interest. El Salvador is a country in Central America with a population of approximately 6.34 million. ENDS
