he Republic of the Maldives today supported United Nations reform as a means to executing the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the Sustainable Development framework, originating from the Rio+20 conference and currently being determined by the body. Speaking in the Plenary of the General Assembly of the United Nations, First Secretary Salim Waheed emphasized the need for a holistic approach towards meeting the world’s challenges.
Recognizing the universality of the United Nations, the Maldives acknowledged current efforts by the General Assembly to interact with international, regional, and sub-regional forums. However, it also called for greater inclusion in decision making processes, calling greater transparency and equity.
The Maldives went on to elaborate their success in achieving 5 out of 8 Millennium Development goals and their current pioneering campaigns on equity, environmental sustainability and partnerships for development. In their international effort on equality, the Maldives underscored their commitment to gender mainstreaming across UN entities and greater women’s participation in governance as a key pillar of their upcoming tenure on the board of UN Women.
