The seventieth session of the United Nations General Assembly opened today. This session of the General Assembly will oversee the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, revitalisation of the General Assembly, continuation of efforts to reform the Security Council and the review of the United Nations peacekeeping operations as well as the peace-building architecture, along with the 15 year review of the Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security. In 2016, the General Assembly will hold a Special Session on the world drug problem, as well as the Habitat 3 Conference and the World Humanitarian Summit.

 

 

In his opening remarks, His Excellency Mr Mogens Lykketoft, the President of the seventieth session announced that he would hold a series of high level thematic debates dedicated to the implementation of commitments relating to sustainable development, climate change and financing, the strengthening of the United Nations role and performance in the area of peace and security, and human rights.

In his opening remarks, his Excellency Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary General asked to ensure that the seventieth session be “one of compassion, prevention, and above all, action”.

Members of the Maldivian delegation in New York represented the Maldives at the opening of the session.

During the seventieth session, the Maldives will celebrate its golden jubilee of membership at the United Nations. A special event will be held to mark the occasion. During this session of the General Assembly, the Maldives delegation will focus mainly on economic and financial matters, and social, humanitarian and cultural matters. In particular, the Maldives will engage on issues ranging from sports for development, oceans, sustainable fisheries, women’s empowerment, and the protection of vulnerable groups.

The seventieth session of the General Assembly will close in September 2016. The General Debate will be held from 28 September 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters.
