19 September 2017, New York, The General Debate of High-level segment of the Seventy Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly began today. The Maldives delegation to the UN General Assembly is led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim. The Maldives delegation includes three other Cabinet Ministers, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee, Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim and Minister of Gender and Family, Ms. Zenysha Shaheed Zaki. The delegation also includes Foreign Secretary, Mr. Ahmed Sareer, the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and Secretary, Bilateral at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Khaleel. During the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, the Maldives delegation will host and co-host a number of side events, which includes "Ending violence against children", "Countering Violent Extremism: Promoting Community Level Prevention", "Securing a Future for the Oceans: Leveraging Sustainable Fisheries for Conservation of Marine Resources", "High Level Briefing on Initiative for Renewable Island Energy (IRIE)" and the side event on "The International (UN) Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development." Maldives also co-hosted an AOSIS breakfast meeting showcasing the leadership and innovation coming out of Small Island Developing States in responding to climate impacts and planning for sustainable future. During the high level week, Maldives also assumed the Chair of the UN Save Our Sharks Coalition. ENDS
