While addressing the General Debate of the 70th Session of the UNGA, Foreign Minister posed to the General Assembly; ‘Have we served, “We the people” well?’. The UN Charter begins with the first three words “We the people”.
The Minister noted that, as the UN celebrates its seventieth anniversary, it provides an opportune time to reflect on the milestones that the Organization has achieved so far, but also contemplate on the future. Foreign Minister reflected on the significant role the UN has played in advocating the rule of law, values of good governance and in reaffirming our faith in fundamental human rights. Drawing reference to the UN Charter, she reminded of the many responsibilities that the UN is mandated to fulfill.
“We promised to promote social progress and a better standard of life…and yes, extreme poverty has been reduced significantly, more children that ever are going to school: yet, the gap between the rich and poor is widening, and ignorance, and intolerance is rampant”, the Foreign Minister emphasized. She further noted on the promise and the hope that the UN presents for humanity and underscored the need for the Organization to be relevant to our times.
