The General Debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly opened today. A high-level delegation from the Maldives, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, attended the opening.
Speaking at the opening, Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the UN Charter and the ideals it represents are in jeopardy. He noted that the only way forward is by cooperation and dialogue. Further, Secretary-General called on world leaders to invest in climate action. The President of the 77th General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi, reiterated the Secretary-General’s points and stated that the world needs solutions through solidarity, sustainability, and science.
The General Debate of the 77th Session of the General Assembly will be held from Tuesday, 20th September to Saturday, 24th September. Heads of State and Governments and heads of national delegations will deliver statements at the General Debate under the theme, “A watershed moment: transformative solutions to interlocking challenges”. As Head of Delegation, Foreign Minister Shahid is scheduled to deliver the statement from Maldives.
