Former President and Special Envoy of the President to the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly, Dr Mohamed Waheed, called on the United Nations Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-moon this morning. The meeting took place at the UN Headquarters in New York.

During the call, Former President Waheed noted the close relations Maldives enjoys with the United Nations and committed to working closely with the UN in the future. He further congratulated the Secretary General on his initiatives, especially the Climate Summit held on 23 September 2014. The Secretary General expressed appreciation of the Maldives’ leadership role in its advocacy on issues of climate change and its impacts on small island developing states. The Secretary General and the Former President also exchanged views on further enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Maldives, especially  in light of the Golden Jubilee of Maldives’ membership at the UN, next year.

 

President Waheed was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Ahmed Sareer and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mr Jeffrey Salim Waheed, and Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Shiruzimath Sameer.

President Waheed is in New York to participate in the high level segment of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, as the Special Envoy of the President.
