Foreign Minister, Ms. Dunya Maumoon is scheduled to address the annual General Debate at the United Nations today. She will be speaking in her capacity as the head of Maldivian delegation to the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Foreign Minister, in her address to the General Assembly, is anticipated to draw attention on the various challenges faced by Small Island Developing States, merits to people centered development, and will emphasize on the need to reorient the development strategies of the UN.

An unprecedented level of world leaders is present at the general debate this year given the prominence of the session. Ahead of the General Debate, world leaders gathered at the UN Sustainable Development Summit to adopt the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. At the Summit, the Maldives delivered its statement on 27th September 2015, and referred to the adoption of the Agenda as a "watershed moment in human history".
