20th September 2011, Male’; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Naseem has arrived in New York City today to attend the 66th United Nations General Assembly.
Before his departure, Minister Naseem spoke on the areas that Maldives will be focusing on during this year’s UNGA. He also spoke on Maldives’ support for the issue of the Palestinian statehood, as well as Maldives stand on democracy and human rights in the context of the Muslim Awakening. Climate change and vulnerability of small island states are also among the key areas Maldives will be focusing on at the UNGA and noted that Maldives will also be participating in the Treaty Event scheduled for 21st September to accede to the Rome Statute of the International Court.
Minister Naseem will also be conducting bilateral calls with the Foreign Ministers from key development partners of Maldives, as well as other notable countries. During his stay in New York Minister Naseem will be attending the SAARC Foreign Ministers’ Lunch, the Commonwealth‘s Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the G77 Annual Meeting for Foreign Ministers’.
The Vice President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Waheed is leading the delegation from Maldives, and will be addressing the UNGA on 26th September 2011. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Aslam Shakir and the Deputy Minister Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi are also in New York for the UNGA.
