21 September 2011, New York City; H.E. Mr. Ahmed Naseem, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives has met with a high-level delegation of the Russian Federation during a bilateral meeting, amongst them H.E. Mr. Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The Russian delegation welcomed the meeting and highlighted that it was the first high-level meeting between the Russian Federation and the Maldives since 1996. The Republic of Maldives desires to strengthen its ties with the Russian Federation. The economic relations between the two states are already fairly advanced as numerous Russian firms have invested in Maldives’ Tourism sector. During the talks, several important issues have been raised, amongst others Asian and Middle Eastern Policy.
The bilateral meeting was also attended by H.E. Mr. Aslam Shakir, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; H.E. Dr. Farahanaz Faizal, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; H.E. Mr Ahmed Sareer, High Commissioner for Bangladesh; H.E. Ms Thilmeeza Hussain, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Maldives Mission to the UN; and Ms Rishfa Rasheed, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
