World leader’s met today at the United Nations during the sidelines of the ongoing 70th Session of the UNGA, to pledge their commitments to countering ISIL & countering and violent extremism. Today’s “Leaders’ Summit” which was chaired by the President of the United States, Barack Obama, follows the UN Security Council session he chaired in 2014 concerning foreign terrorist fighters and the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism that took place early this year in February.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, H.E. Ms. Dunya Maumoon, attended today’s summit on behalf of the Government of Maldives. Reflecting on the Summit and its main objectives, the Minister noted, “Terrorism has no geographical parameters, nor is it restricted to one country or region. We all agree that the threat of ISIL is global. Maldives is committed to play its part in the global strategy that is required to combat and counter extremism.”
Some 60 head of states belonging to the international coalition in the fight against ISIL & countering violent extremism were present at today’s Summit.
