21 September 2016, New York;The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the Minister of Environment & Minister of Fisheries of Canada, H.E. Ms. Leona Aglukkaq earlier today at the sidelines of the 71st Session of the UNGA in New York.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim expressed appreciation for Canada's active leadership in advocating for climate action and stated that he was encouraged by the recent announcement of Canada to ratify the Paris Agreement before COP22 in Marrakech in November 2016.  He also expressed his gratitude for Canada's continued support to the Maldives and other small island developing states in their fight for stronger climate action by the international community as SIDS remain at the forefront of global climate change impacts.

At the meeting today, the Foreign Ministers discussed to deepen collaboration on areas of mutual interest.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador/ Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations.
