Maldives continues strong advocacy on issues affecting Small Island Developing States

SIDSNew York, 24 September 2016; In keeping with its long-standing tradition of advocacy and awareness building on issues relating to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and in its capacity as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), Maldives continued to actively participate in several activities throughout the course of the high-level week of the  seventy-first session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The events highlighted some of most critical issues for SIDS, such as climate change, renewable energy, oceans, seas and marine life, even on aspects of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through the mandates of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As head of the Maldives Delegation, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim, made several interventions calling on its partners, the international community and the United Nations to continue to support SIDS as they try to build resilient and sustainable environments for their populace, as they forge to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with the obligations of the SAMOA Pathway, Paris Agreement under UNFCCC, Addis Abba Action Agenda on Financing for Development, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Maldives reiterates the importance of focusing on implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals

24 September 2016, New York; Maldives participated in numerous thematic side events during the High Level week of the United Nations General Assembly addressing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), engaging to share best practices based on the Maldives experience as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) and to encourage continued political momentum to achieve the SDGs.

On 23 September 2016 Foreign Secretary of the Republic of Maldives Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, attended the side event hosted by Tajikistan, UNDP and DESA on revitalizing efforts towards the implementation of water related SDGs and targets. The Foreign Secretary highlighted the importance of finding sustainable solutions to the challenge of water scarcity in the Maldives and other developing countries. Additionally, the Foreign Secretary and Permanent Representative Ahmed Sareer attended the "SDGs: Coming to Life." This unique event provided an opportunity for the United Nations Development Group and United Nations Development Programme to share examples of countries working to mainstream the SDGs into national legislation, and for the Maldives to speak to its national efforts to coordinate implementation of the SAMOA Pathway alongside the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

New York, 23 September 2016; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon today at the UN Headquarters in New York.

During the meeting, the Secretary General expressed his appreciation of the leadership that the Maldives has been demonstrating on global issues such as climate change and sustainable development.

Minister Asim thanked the Secretary General and his team for their excellent and close partnership with the Maldives, in its capacity as the Chair of AOSIS.

AOSIS Leaders Gather at UNGA

AOSIS_Leaders_Lunch_23 September 2016, New York; In what has become something of an annual tradition, AOSIS leaders gathered on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly for a luncheon to rejuvenate the group's 26-year partnership. In that time, AOSIS has grown to include 39 members and 5 observers from Small Island States around the world, nearly one-fifth of the UN's voting membership and solidifies its role as the moral conscience of the climate change and sustainable development negotiations.

That group's leadership was on display this week as 8 AOSIS members—Papua New Guinea, Dominica, Kiribati, Singapore, Tonga, Antigua and Barbuda, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands completed their Paris Agreement ratification processes, bringing the members to have done so to 25.

The Maldives leads the way on Oceans Awareness during High Level week of the UN General Assembly

New York, 23 September 2016: Participating actively in a variety of side events on oceans issues, the Maldives emphasized the importance of the health of the ocean to small island developing states.

Speaking at a dialogue organized by Norway on Oceans and the Blue Economy, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim, argued for the business case for advancing towards a blue economy and its relevance to small island developing states. Dr. Asim called on the international community to increase efforts for sustainable use and conservation of marine resources as a prerequisite for sustainable development in SIDS. He also called on island states to work towards eliminating local threats to marine pollution like waste management, coastal zone management and fishing practices.
