acting19th December 2010 – The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, H. E. Mr. Mohamed Aslam has warmly welcomed the outcome of the 16th Conference of Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, Mexico, as a significant step forward for international efforts to address global warming.

In a letter to the Mexican Foreign Minister Ms. Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, congratulating the success of Cancun, Minister Aslam welcomed Mexico’s strong leadership, and the transparent and inclusive manner in which she conducted the negotiations. He also expressed hope that Ms. Cantellano would continue to play a key role along with South African in the “Troika” that was formed, and that the key elements set down in the Cancun Agreement would eventually form the basis of a new legally-binding treaty to tackle climate change.

Maldives addresses the United Nations General Assembly Second Committee on sustainable development

sustainable-developmentNovember 2010, New York – The Maldives Mission to the United Nations spoke at the Second Committee about sustainable development issues, outlining concerns common to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and providing updates on its own progress in addressing those concerns.

The impediments to development caused by a lack of capacity and capital for infrastructural projects were emphasized in context of the lack of fulfillment of aid commitments by donor countries and the widespread effects of globalization. The Maldives urged development partners to honour their aid commitments without delay so that SIDS are more easily able to overcome these hurdles, and called for special WTO considerations in order to facilitate integration into the global economy.

unga Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed has addressed the General Assembly in New York calling for “speedy disbursement of the promised aid” at the Maldives Donors’ Conference which was held March of his year.

The Vice President, , who is representing the Maldives’ at the UN General Assembly this year, argued that while the Maldives would be graduating form UN list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the Maldives “also remain concerned” about the sudden withdrawal of some of the benefits afforded to LDC states.

yaleNew York, Sep 20 2010 – Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, Vice President of the Republic of Maldives was the keynote speaker at a reception hosted by the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Dr. Waheed addressed students and leading scholars on the impact of climate change on small island nations. With 80 percent of its islands less than 1 meter high, rapid sea-level rise caused by global warming threatens the very existence of the Maldives.

The Vice President’s speech was accompanied by Vulnerable, a photography exhibition documenting the plight of the fragile coral islands of the Maldives.
