11 October 2016, New York; The Maldives, speaking on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), argued for the importance of pursuing implementation of sustainable development commitments, and for there to be a continued understanding of the linkages between climate change, sustainable development, and disaster risk reduction. Addressing the Economic and Financial (Second) Committee of the United Nations on Agenda 19: Sustainable Development, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations stressed that "rising sea levels, increasing extreme weather events, and ocean acidification threaten not only our development, but our very survival," and as such, welcomed the recent entry into force of the Paris Agreement, while calling on all remaining countries to sign and ratify the document, and for everyone to begin with implementation.

10 October 2016, New York; At the United Nations General Assembly debate on Advancement of Women, the Maldives has urged to ensure that women are not treated as followers or merely beneficiaries, but as leaders, contributors and agents of change.
Delivering the statement at the Third Committee on behalf of the Maldives delegation, Ms. Zeena Mohamed Didi, Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations, highlighted the country's efforts towards achieving gender equality. "Our policy to achieve gender equality is clear: continue to invest in girls and women; continue to give them the right tools to realize their true potential; and continue to introduce structural and normative changes to enable women to fight for their constitutionally guaranteed rights before the law", the Committee was told.

6 October 2016, New York; Underscoring that transnational and organized crime remains an obstacle to sustainable economic and social development, the Maldives has today called for a global commitment to fighting the war against crime. The call was made by the Maldives in its statement to the debate at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly under the Agenda Item on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice/International Drug Control.
Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, Ms. Aisha Naeem, Senior State Counsel at the Attorney General's Office emphasized the domestic efforts being undertaken by the Maldives to combat widespread crimes such as drug trafficking, trafficking of persons and money laundering.

Speaking on Agenda item 84 – 'Rule of Law at the national and international levels' in the Sixth Committee of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, highlighted that, the Maldives cannot make exceptions to the rule of law. He mentioned that, uniformity, transparency, and consistency in the application of the rule of law are imperatives to maintain public confidence in the legal and judicial systems.

05 October 2016, Male' : Vice President Abdulla Jihad stated that United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been a contributor to global development and has provided long-standing support in achieving socio-economic development goals around the world, including the Maldives. He stated this while addressing the participants at a celebratory event held to mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the UNDP. The event was held early Wednesday evening at Hotel Jen.
During the speech, the Vice President congratulated, UNDP, for providing 50 years of fruitful service around the globe. In his speech, Vice President highlighted that during UNDP's 38 years of operations in the Maldives, they have worked closely with government ministries and private partners to help realize a myriad of national plans which was in line with developmental aspirations of the Maldivian people.
