The Director commended the remarkable work done by the Gender Ministry towards ending violence against children, and noted particularly close cooperation between the country office and government of Maldives. Minister Zenysha thanked UNICEF for their continuous support and expressed hope that the existing cooperation would be further strengthened.

Maldives calls on the International Community to take immediate action against the atrocities faced by Rohingya Muslims

19 September 2017, New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has called on the International Community to take immediate action against the atrocities faced by the Rohingya Muslims, while speaking at the OIC Emergency meeting on the situation of Rohingya Muslims this held this afternoon on the side-lines of the High Level Segment of the United Nations General Assembly.

Minister Asim stated that the Maldives is deeply concerned over the continued acts of human rights violations and barbarous assaults against the Rohingya Muslims and urged the Myanmar government to respect its obligations under international humanitarian laws, and to fully cooperate with UN agencies, non-governmental organisations and all others to provide humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya population.

The emergency meeting was convened by the OIC to mobilise the International community on the plight of Rohingya Muslims and to address the crisis faced by the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar.

Maldives and El Salvador establish diplomatic relations

19 September 2017, New York – The Republic of Maldives and The Republic of El Salvador has established diplomatic relations today. The joint communiqué establishing relations between the two countries were signed by Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives and Ing. Hugo Roger Martínez Bonilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador. The joint communiqué was signed at a ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In their remarks at the ceremony, Minister Asim and Minister Bonilla highlighted that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries marks a historic opening for cooperation connecting the peoples of the two countries in all areas of mutual interest.

El Salvador is a country in Central America with a population of approximately 6.34 million.
