Ambassador Mohamed delivered the Statement at the debate at the General Assembly today on the "Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council and Other Matters Related to the Security Council".

In his Statement, Ambassador Mohamed noted that the UN and the Security Council "were structured according to the needs, and the realities of the time. Yet, that reality has changed most profoundly. The Maldives emphasizes on the need to be objective and accurate in compiling UN Reports

Sunday, 08 October 2017 09:29

New York: 8 October 2017: The Government of Maldives takes note of the Report of the Secretary-General issued on 6 October 2017 entitled "Children in Armed Conflict". In the Report, the Secretary General notes the substantive progress that the Coalition has made in their efforts to protect the lives, rights, and welfare of children who are affected by conflict in Yemen.

The Report also lists instances of violations committed by parties to the conflict, and those allegedly by the Coalition. It is apparent, however, that the allegations leveled against the Coalition were based not on first hand observation by the officials of the United Nations, but regrettably, on reports by various other parties, including NGOs.

The Maldives has always argued on the need to verify information using the most objective methods, especially if the information were to use in public documents. International organisations, including the UN, and the European Union, should follow a rigorous process of verifying the information they use for policy purposes and in public documents.
