The Maldives

Thursday, 16 September 2010 03:25

PalmBest known for our turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and a thriving tourism industry, the Republic of Maldives is a nation founded by a history of international engagement – from the Silk Road in days of old to more recent regional engagement, to now taking the lead in the global fight to mitigate climate change. We are a small nation with a large voice, dedicated to principles that would take the world forward, progressing in friendship and peace.

The Republic of the Maldives, or the “pearls of the Indian Ocean” as it is popularly know, is a collection of 1,190 coral reef islands situated in the Indian Ocean to the south west of Sri Lanka. The 1,190 islands form an archipelago of 26 major atolls (groups of neighbouring coral islands) stretching 820 km north to south and 120 km east to west.

Only 200 islands are inhabited, with 44 adapted as exclusive holiday resort islands. The country’s 2006 (preliminary) population census shows a total population of 298,842. Over one third of this total reside in the capital Male.

The Maldives is a friendly country with idyllic scenery and a rich culture. The different links on the left provide a short introduction to the country’s history, geography, economy, environment, health and education systems, and participation in international organisations and conventions.

However, the best way to discover the country is to come and visit!

Maldives Urges for Reorientation of the International Fight Against Illicit Narcotics

Wednesday, 07 October 2009 19:00

The Maldives has today urged the United Nations to refocus its fight against illicit narcotics from security protection to enhanced public health. The Maldives made the statement today at the Social, Human rights and Cultural Committee of the General Assembly of the UN.

Speaking on behalf of the Maldives, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ms. Iruthisham Adam stated, “controlling drugs is not only a security issue. It is an issue that affects families as well as societies as a whole. Hence, a clear and distinct reorientation of the global fight is necessary”. The reorientation, explained Ms Adam, does not necessarily undermine the importance of a consolidated legal framework against drug traffickers but would emphasize the significance of the treatment of drug victims as equally important. Ms. Adam further suggested that increasing awareness among youth on the dangers of drug addiction and a stronger commitment by States to rehabilitate drug abuse victims could enable bringing about this shift. Thus, the Maldives  expressed support to the call made by Mr. Antonio Maria Costa, Executive Direction of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to avoid criminalization of drug victims.
