21 October 2011, New York; Maldives today, pledged to continue to work with the international community, namely the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers and the International Commission of Jurists, to address the challenges facing the judiciary system of the country. During an intervention made following a statement delivered by Ms. Gabriela Knaul, Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, at the 66th United Nations General Assembly, Maldives also recognised that legitimacy is the key to an independence judiciary and to gain legitimacy women must be represented at all levels.

19 October 2011, New York; The Third Committee of the United Nations heard separate reports from Special Rapporteurs on the Human Rights situations in Iran, Myanmar, and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK). Maldives has been a staunch advocate for international human rights and has made the promotion of human rights the main focus of its foreign policy goals. As such, Maldives called on the three countries to engage with the international community and advance the basic human rights for their citizens.

The Maldives Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Honduras

13 October 2011, New York: The Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Honduras established diplomatic relations, today. The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by H.E. Mr Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations and by H.E. Ms. Mary Elizabeth Flores, Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of Honduras. The ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Honduras.
