Today the Maldives has joined the global chorus of voices condemning the violence in the Middle East and especially the State of Palestine, as the United Nations Security Council held an open debate on the subject.

Speaking at the open debate, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations said that “the United Nations resolutions and subsequent negotiations have made clear that the Israeli occupation that began in 1967 has no place in the modern world, and that the State of Palestine must be recognized”.  He further urged that the State of Palestine must be granted full independence with its pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Malé, Maldives – Senior officials from the Governments of the United States and Republic of Maldives met today under the United States-Maldives Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) to launch their trade dialogue and evaluate developments in our trade and investment relationship.  The officials discussed a wide range of trade and investment issues including the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), labor and worker rights’ issues, trade promotion efforts, intellectual property rights, fishery and other exports, and Maldives’ plans for attracting significant foreign investment.  Progress on all of these trade and investment issues is expected to foster economic growth, providing a strong foundation for inclusive economic development in Maldives and improved trade relations between the two countries.

“No sustainable development without gender equality,” says Maldives

img_6203The Maldives has stressed the need for women's advancement to be plugged into the post-2015 development agenda.  This was emphasised in its statement at the Third Committee of the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on the agenda item, Advancement of Women.  "There cannot be human development without women's advancement. There cannot be sustainable development without gender equality", the statement said.

Maldives condemns acts of terrorism and asserts not to associate terrorism with any religion or culture

img-20141010-wa0005Maldives has condemned all acts, methods and practices of terrorism as well as stated that terrorism should not be associated with any religion or culture, during the debate on “Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism” at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Noting that terrorism coupled with fanaticism and extremism poses a greater threat to the world than ever before, the Maldives asserted that the so-called Islamic State and other such terrorist organizations “are not only un-islamic, but are in fact anti-islamic”. The statement argued that these entities could not be regarded as religious groups but rather identified as terrorist organizations.

Maldives calls for international cooperation to halt transnational crimes before they reach its shores

2com agenda 22At the Third Committee of the 69th Session of the General Assembly, the Maldives emphasised the need for international support and cooperation against the spread of criminal activity, including human and drug trafficking, across its borders. Speaking at the Committee, Ambassador Sareer stated that "being incredibly porous, the Maldives is at risk of becoming a transit  State for transnational crimes such as human and drug trafficking". These transnational crimes pose a threat to peace and security as well as to the human rights and social development of its people, it was noted.
