Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid met with several Foreign Ministers and Permanent Representatives in New York today.
 
Foreign Minister Shahid met with the Foreign Ministers of Belgium, Dominican Republic and Kuwait and discussed avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation on global issues of mutual interest, multilaterally.   
 
Foreign Minister Shahid also met with Permanent Representatives of Fiji, Singapore, India, Japan, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria and held discussions on issues of mutual interest, and explored avenues for future cooperation, especially on issues of critical importance to the Maldives such as climate change.
 
The Foreign minister is visiting New York, to speak at the United Nations Security Council’s Open Debate “Addressing impacts of climate-related disasters on international peace and security”, scheduled for 25 January.
 
Minister Shahid was accompanied in the meetings by Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN and Ambassador to the United States and senior officials at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations in New York.
