Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the UN, Ambassador Ali Naseer Mohamed said today that “As responsible members of the international community, all States, especially the key players in the conflict, must uphold the latter and spirit of the Security Council resolutions”. The Ambassador made the remarks in his Statement to the UN Security Council open debate on “the situation in the Middle East, including the Question of Palestine” held today at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Ambassador Mohamed stated that it has been more than half a century since the General Assembly recommended a two-State solution with clearly defined borders between State of Palestine and Israel and the Security Council through its Resolutions also declared the Israeli occupation of Palestine as illegal. Ambassador Mohamed also rejected the recent illegal demolition of a Palestinian village by Israel and called upon all key players in the conflict to uphold the Security Council resolutions. Ambassador Mohamed reiterated the call for an independent State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its Capital based on the 1967 borders.

On Syria, Ambassador Mohamed also called on all actors of the conflict to prioritise the fundamental human rights of the people affected and allow access to humanitarian relief. Ambassador Mohamed also noted on the need to tackle the enabling factors of terrorism through international cooperation, sharing of information and through strategies that focus on combating violent extremism.
